trusty ol' cardboard

a model in the magazines

Hope everyone is getting it together for the holidays! Sometimes a piece of cardboard is just staring you in the face and you have to draw something on it. Well, it happens to me at least. Enjoy!

So I just missed the deadline for the Illustration Friday topic this week, but I'm really pleased with how this is turning out, so I'm going to show it anyway.

October 31st

stupidhats

C'mon folks, October 31st is not an excuse to wear cheap ears on your head and call it a costume. We need complete transformations here! Don't just wear a plastic viking hat from walmart and tell me you're a viking. Without some sort of animal hide and/or a beard I'm not convinced. You're not a devil if you have horns and a stuffed red sock sticking out of the back of your pants. Give it some effort people! Body paint! full outfits! latex noses! if you just want to accessorize a la halloween, wear a "kittens frolicking around a jack-o-lantern" sweatshirt or an I ♥ pumpkins button or something. We need a little more gusto (ghosto?) on all hallow's eve!

A new painting, "Crabs." I'm really enjoying acrylics now that I've found birch wood.

Business Brochure

I recently did a group of illustrations for a brochure for a newspaper called The Chronicle of Higher Education. The theme is how the newspaper can help you establish your university as a strong brand via all the services the paper offers via profiling, job listings, etc. Here I've posted some of the drawings, I'm pretty pleased with the whole thing, especially the colors.

Spread 1 detail

Here's a close-up of a two-page spread in the brochure

Spot 5

I've decided that her name is Talia.

Spot 6

I really like the way the colors and lines came out on this one.

You'll be able to find these on my website when I finish updating it (very soon!)

Welcome!

kidicarus_redux

Here's a great first entry! it's one of my favorite images in recent weeks, Kid Icarus. That game was a complete bitch and I never got past the first level when I was a kid. Now that I'm all grown up I still wouldn't be able to get past the levels if it weren't for quick saves in my emulator software. Apparently he's going to be in the new Wii version of Smash Brothers. It's about time they brought back this great character!

I've also posted this image at Sugar Frosted Goodness, a community blog I recently joined! Check it out.
