SDCC+

It's been awhile since my last post! A lot has happened, Artomatic has come and gone (made some great sales!), I moved (a mile away from my old home), I attended San Diego Comic-con and I've turned 30 (and I recommend Wolfgang Puck's The Source restaurant). All of which were quite a blast. Below are 2 highlights from my trip to comic-con taken by Tony.

My Leetle Pony

Comic-con was a new adventure, I've never attended or been to San Diego. Got to see one of my favorite artists speak, Jim Woodring, saw Gwen Stefani's pants at the Hard Rock Hotel, ate fish tacos and doodled on my nintendo DS.

As mentioned, I moved recently, so I haven't been doing much at home other than putting my house and studio together. Work has been keeping me busy with a really fun super secret project, it's a printed piece with tons of drawings in it and I can't wait until it's released upon the world. I'll get images up here as soon as I can.

I'm also getting my gocco warmed up so I can offer some prints. All in due course. I'll keep everyone posted!

Yokai in Your Eye: 6/14/08-7/26/08

Futakuchi-Onna
"Futakuchi-Onna" 11.5 x 11.5", acrylic on wood

This past weekend was the opening of Yokai in Your Eye group show at the Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery in Florida, I was unable to attend, but Amanda, the gallery owner, was able to take some really great shots of the participating artists' work and the show itself. Check out her Flickr set here.

Artomatic 2008 is here!

Tonight is the night folks!

It's time for ARTOMATIC 2008 and I'll be participating for the very
first time! I'll have 2 new paintings and a new serigraph print
available. (pictured here)

Defeated Again

The opening night is TONIGHT, Friday (May 9th) from 12pm-2am. Free
admission.

I'm on the 11th floor (the floor with the bar) on the NW side (the
side without the bar). I plan on being there from about 7pm until late. So drop by whenever you can.

Artomatic (http://artomatic.org)
Opening Friday, May 9 - Closing June 15
1200 First St NE
Capital Plaza I - corner of First & M streets NE - NY Ave Metro
Wed-Thu: 5pm-10pm; Fri-Sat: noon-2am; Sun: noon-10pm; closed Mon-Tue

The amount of artists this year is huge, There's around 1,000 participants. 10 floors of artwork. And no worries about finding your way around. It's a simple layout (unlike the maze of rooms from last year).

Parking, from what I understand, is on the street, there's 2 clubs nearby, so the metro is probably your best bet. It's a quick couple blocks from the NY Ave. train station, you can see the building from the platform.

Thanks everyone, hope to see you there, with friends!

Plagiarism is Assy

The popular illustration portal Little Chimp Society and many of the illustrators featured on the site have been ripped off. A Chinese publisher of mysterious origins has produced a several hundred page book of the website's content and is selling it online for $100.

Interviews and artwork were swiped verbatim from the website and while the artists are all credited, none of them were contacted or are being compensated for their artwork. The clincher for me is the fact that the book contains a CD of all the images in the book and they didn't even bother to change the file names from the web!

The rightfully disgruntled Darren Di Lieto has posted about this on his blog and the contents of the book have been posted as well.

legitimate irony:

I've posted to the site and fortunately my artwork wasn't swiped, so either A. I'm not popular enough to include, or B. my low-res images saved my ass.
So if you're a copyright lawyer or know one, I hear LCS is looking for one.

Not "Crafty Mofo"

Mr. Crafty Bastard

from KarenElizabeth's Flickr stream.

I think it's noteworthy that Silver Spring is going to have it's own branch of the Crafty Bastards fair this year. As per Silver Spring, Singular:
Are you the child of an unwed mother and posses mad crochet skills? If so, then Crafty Bastards is a perfect opportunity for you! As I mentioned before, the Washington City Paper's crafts fair is expanding to Silver Spring this summer, and they are now accepting applications for booth space. Better hurry, as the deadline is April 16th. Let's ensure that MoCo is adequately represented at the event instead of allowing carpetbaggin' DC crafties to monopolize the booths.

Artomatic, the Washington, D.C., area’s eclectic, engaging — and occasionally even eye-popping — arts extravaganza is back this spring and promises to be more of a draw than ever before.

The NoMa (north of Massachusetts Avenue) Business Improvement District (BID) will host this year’s homegrown art extravaganza, Artomatic. From May 9 through June 15, 2008, hundreds of local and regional artists will exhibit their works throughout the Capitol Plaza building, located at First and M Streets, N.E., just one block west of the New York Avenue Metro station.

Held regularly since 1999, Artomatic transforms an unfinished indoor space into an exciting and incredibly diverse arts event that is free and open to the public. In addition to displays and sales by hundreds of artists, the event features free musical, dance, and theater performances; holiday celebrations; films; educational presentations; and much more.

This year’s Artomatic, occupying 200,000 square feet at Capitol Plaza, will be the largest to date. Designed by the renowned architect Shalom Baranes and owned by Polinger, Shannon & Luchs, Capitol Plaza offers 293,000 rentable square feet of Class A office space, with dramatic Capitol and city views from the upper floors.

The Fray "Busted!" Issue #1 out now!

Fray is a quarterly of true stories and original art.

This is the cover of Issue #1 of the new print quarterly of Fray. Fray is about true, personal stories and original art. It's a themed book and comes out 4 times a year. This issue is about getting busted or caught in the act and has turned out really beautifully thanks to the love of the staff. Here's my image for the story "Ropeswing Season" by Kirk Read.

Acrylic Ink Work in Prog

crushing thoughts (in progress)

Been working on a series of images on cardboard. I work them out in pencil, as you can see here and then move on to inking them in 3 colors. I think the final result is pretty solid. The color of the board is more realistic in the scan of the final (below). The top one is slightly lighter so you can see the pencil details a bit better.

Bedford Springs Resort -- It only felt a little bit like The Shining

Bedford Springs Indoor Pool

As I mentioned previously, Tony and I went to Bedford Springs Resort in Pennsylvania. It was a lovely relaxing time. The place has a rich history, established in the 1800's it survived all the way to the 80s when it finally closed it's doors. It reopened last year and has been designed to the hilt. Lots of great old furniture, modern conveniences and unique touches, from rich wallpapers to ceramic room number plaques. Check out Tony's photo set from the trip.

I was 14 Years old in 1992

The Insides

Golden Girls, Weeknights at 7pm

These photos are documentation of a time capsule that I created for myself in 1992. Dated to be opened in 2005. I opened it then, but stored it away for the last few years. So this stuff is roughly 15 years old, and at the age of 14 I thought I might be interested to see these things in the "Future."

GOG

Looks like Art in Heat '07 made it into an end of year list over at washingtonpost.com's Going Out Gurus. Thanks Jared for pointing this out! Will there be an Art in Heat '08? Only time will tell (I vote for yes)

From the GOG article:
"'Tug of War' at Hemphill and 'Art in Heat' at the Warehouse. I was glad to see a number of lowbrow/pop-surrealist shows on local gallery dockets this year. Even though the technique in most of the pieces on view was top notch, this brand of sometimes-cartoony art doesn't take itself too seriously and that's kind of refreshing when you go out for a night of art viewing. We have a great stable of locals who produce this kind of work, and it was great to see their pieces represented in the Warehouse show. Many of those same artists' names are now on the walls at Alexandria's newish Art Whino gallery."

Spent the weekend in Bedford Springs, PA. A photo or two from that once Tony gets them sorted!

Been working on a series of ink paintings on cardboard. More on that soon too!

Sketchbook update!

me oh my!

Been messing more with patterns and simple shapes in my sketchbook. It's looking good. Hope everyone is having a healthy and happy New Year. I've been gearing up to do some more paintings on wood. Lots of sketching! I'll be checking in again soon.
